Fuel Surcharge Calculator

Calculate your exact FSC rate per mile and total surcharge to bill your broker.

What Is a Fuel Surcharge?

A fuel surcharge (FSC) is an extra charge carriers add to their freight invoices to offset rising diesel costs. It protects owner-operators from absorbing fuel price spikes that would otherwise eat into their profit margins.

How Is FSC Calculated?

The standard formula is: (Current Diesel Price − Base Fuel Peg) ÷ Truck MPG = FSC per Mile. The base fuel peg is the diesel price that was assumed when the line-haul rate was negotiated — the industry default is $1.50/gallon. Multiply the per-mile rate by total load miles for your total surcharge amount.

Tips for Owner-Operators

Always include your fuel surcharge as a separate line item on your invoice. This makes it clear to the broker and speeds up payment approval. If you’re using RigInvoice, the FSC line is added automatically when you enter your load details.
